MarsEdit hits 2.2
MarsEdit, the blogging client we've written about frequently in the past, has just been updated to version 2.2. MarsEdit is a favorite for many of us at TUAW (myself included) and supports a variety of publishing platforms. The newest version adds support for AtomPub, which like XML-RPC, is a protocol for connecting blog software to your blog itself. Daniel Jalkut, MarsEdit's developer, says to consider AtomPub support "introductory" -- but if you are using a custom blogging platform that uses AtomPub, you can now use MarsEdit to create content.
MarsEdit 2.2 also adds customizable image markup in addition to the built-in macros for image alignment. So if you frequently like to have images aligned in a certain way, you can create your own custom macro.
MarsEdit 2.2 is also significantly faster (I was pleased to see this myself, as start-up time was much quicker than the previous version). There is also now support for removing media items from the media catalog, a pull down editor for selecting the date, and improved MIME type generation for uploaded files.
Mobile fans take note -- Daniel is working on an iPhone version of MarsEdit, and it will be released as soon as he is satisfied with the quality of the final product.
MarsEdit requires Tiger or Leopard. The update is free for current users. You can try MarsEdit for free for 30-days or buy it for $29.99.

MarsEdit is a good product, but hardly worth $29.99

Yeah, you'd think a program worth $29.99 would have spell check. "pul" and "releaed"?
Kidding, I really like MarsEdit and I always get nice red lines under my misspellings.

D'oh! In my defense -- the spell check in our CMS didn't point it out and I'm all hopped up on pain pills.
Fixed (thanks Scott)!

It's a good product. I'm satisfied.
Thats why I want to downgrade from 2.2 and back to 2.1.
A small detail: Before, when you wanted to edit the date on a post, you just typed in the date and hour. Now you have to sit tapping the mouse scrolling through the numbers.
It's a small thing, sure. But I use "edit date" on many of my posts, preparing them for the next day or week. So the small thing annoys you every time you write a post, and on top of that it is ineffective and slow.

Dan - are you sure you can't type in the date field? It seems to be working for me. Nobody else has reported this bug, so you might be able to help me figure out what's going on. If you don't mind drop me a line support at red-sweater.com.

fine product. definitely worth the price, especially if you make a lot of posts and like or need to be able to work offline. one thing I wish for is support for custom fields. I have some blogs I cannot use it with because of that. with all the premium themes that make extensive use of custom fields, it is near being a mandatory feature. hopefully will see it soon.

I'm testing it with my Drupal site. Entering a future date doesn't hold the post though, it gets published immediately. Most likely an issue with Drupal, not MarsEdit.
I would really like to see a "backup all posts" type of feature like ecto has. Doing a datbase backup at the server level is too much work - ecto allows you to save all your posts as text, RSS, etc...
