Ulysses 1.6
Call me crazy but I bet there are a few would-be, and some actual, novelists out there who read TUAW. Am I right? Thought so. If you are amongst that august group then you might be tickled by the Blue Technologies Group's text editor: Ulysses. It was built from the ground up with writers in mind with features that include:- Grouping of files
- Semantic Text editing (this allows you to create your own markup language. You can mark up your document in a way that makes sense to you and then export it and see those words that you marked as bold show up as bold in the resulting document. Trust me, this is cool stuff)
- A single window for all your documents
- Powerful search
Ulysses now comes in two flavors: Ulysses is the full featured application which costs 79.99 € (half off for EDU buyers) and Ulysses Core which has a subset of features (check out this chart to see what the Core version leaves out) and will set you back 39.99 € ( 25.99 € for education buyers).

It looks promising but I think I'll stay with Scrivener which is a terrific piece of writing app.

I'm also a big fan (and user) of Scrivener. It costs $40, and is very polished. The built-in organization really suits my writing style, and I can work in rich text format with bold and italic in context.

The Scrivener website also includes links and descriptions to similar writing software, including Ulysses. It's a nice place to start if you're thinking about writing software.

I love this app. But, until they sell it with a set dollar price, I'm not buying it. They only sell it in Euros, and with the ever weakening dollar, this once over-priced app just keeps getting even more expensive. You can buy MS Office for only $20 more. I'd rather Ulysses than Office, but it's just too expensive for the average user.

Exactly... With WriteRoom (and I guess Word too), I'm not interested in dropping $110 on another writing app.

Scrivener does everything Ulysses does for almost 1/3 the price. And it looks and acts like a Mac app, not a Windows port like Ulysses. I swear this app gets more free press and kudos than any other writing software of all time. So much so, that I keep going back to check out the newest version to see what's causing the renewed buzz. When I do, I find it's still same ol' fine (but not magical) program that's over-priced and out-classed by Scrivener.

Wow...that pricepoint is definitely gonna hurt their sales. Crazy-greed here.

I prefer Ulysses to Scrivener hands-down. I don't think it feel like a Windows port at all. Thanks for letting us know about the update, Scott.

Scrivener is great. I'm not sure that Ulysses offers anything above and beyond Scrivener.
