Found Footage: Waiting in line for an iPhone 3G
Our good friends over at Engadget posted an exclusive interview from the line that is forming outside of the 5th Avenue Apple Store. In the video, they interview the first three people in line and ask them what they're doing. According to Daniel, the group leader, they are trying to "break a world record for most time spent waiting in line to buy something."

It's too bad Engadget didn't explain any of the real reasons those guys are waiting in line. They're an environmental activist group trying to build attention for things like local, organically grown food, as well as a lofty goal of getting the next president's attention.

What does waiting in line for an iPhone have to do with the environment?

"environmental activist group"
So they're basically a bunch of unemployed kids then, is that it?

The environment doesn't really have much to do with the iPhone (unless you're Greenpeace), but the idea here is to piggyback off the popularity of the iPhone and (hopefully) get the cause in front of a lot of eyeballs. They're already getting coverage on tech and Apple blogs. They'll probably hit mainstream outlets sometime this week, netting interviews and face time on TV.

How is consumerism good for the environment? If they really cared about the environment they should be discouraging people from buying the latest greatest gadgets. I can guarantee their carbon/environmental footprint would be much smaller if they stayed home.

I dunno what's worse - people waiting in line so long for a product when they have better things to do (like work or earn money or feeding the poor), OR TUAW/Engadget giving this press.
If they are actually protestors, that would actually be more interesting.

Breaking the world record for most time spent waiting in line to buy something? By camping out for a week?! Their comrades in the Soviet Union of yore would not be impressed. Getting a phone there could take years.

People waited in line for over six months to buy tickets when Star Wars Episode I debuted. These dorks are off by a factor of 30.
