Rumor: iPhone 3G Launch on June 9th
Gizmodo is reporting that "sources close to the 3G launch" have provided confirmation that the iPhone 3G will be announced at the WWDC 2008 Keynote on June 9th. While this does sound a lot like a rumor, other factors such as nonexistent stocks of first-generation iPhones, the flurry of non-US iPhone launch announcements last week, and the all-but-confirmed Steve Jobs keynote all point to something big.Gizmodo also speculates that European launch dates are scheduled to follow close on the heels of the US announcement, with iPhone 3G availability in Spain at the grand opening of the Telefonica megastore in Madrid on June 18th.
June 9th sounds good to me, since I can buy my wife an iPhone 3G for our 29th anniversary on that day! What's your take on the iPhone 3G rumor du jour? Give it a reality check by taking our poll:
Tip 'o the TUAW Stetson to Sharvil for pointing this out!

We need more details.... A really good leaking insider would tell us more...

Are you sure you really want a leaking insider? One would assume with all that leaking, he'd be pretty easy to trace. Someone's gotta mop up after him.

Has there been any rumor on price point for the 3G? Would it simply replace the current offerings at the same price, as is Apple's M.O.?
I am interested in it, though putting out the money for the 8GB that I have was hard enough. I'm sure once the 3G is out the value of the Edge only phones will go down significantly.
How much faster is 3G than Edge?

It's ridiculously faster. That's my opinion of course, not a scientific comparison! lol
I've used both EDGE and 3G and it's basically the same as when you finally upgraded from that old 56k modem and got a broadband connection.
The jump is HUGE, night and day as far as I'm concerned.

Sorry, but this part just made me laugh: "other factors such as... the all-but-confirmed Steve Jobs keynote all point to something big"
AFAIK, Steve has given the keynote at every WWDC since he's been back. So first of all, if he WEREN'T speaking, that would be news. But since he is speaking, AS ALWAYS, this alone indicates exactly NOTHING. (And ADDED TO other things, it doesn't add anything, if that makes any sense.)
I predict that the sun will rise the morning of the keynote. That indicates to me the possibility of a partnership with Sun. Any takers?

not anymore, the sun announced there plans to rise that morning prematurely. So, the sun will no longer rise that morning and we won't actually be able to see the new iPhone

I could give a crap because there is still no 3G in my area, yet every single person from AT&T I spoke with said it would be here 2 years ago at least and I'm not out in the boonies by any means. Way to roll out new (old) technology AT&T.

Don't don't even HAVE AT&T in our area...

*Yawn* Kind of obvious by now, isn't it?
I heard a rumor that June 9 is going to be a Monday.

It is a Monday, it's my birthday.

I'd vote, but the option for "Duh!" is missing.

I really appreciate that TUAW prefaces the headline as "Rumor" as opposed to Gizmodo who is providing the "breaking" news of a "confirmed" launch date.

Oh god, why couldn't they release it on the 8th?
It's my birthday on the 9th and I want an iPhone.

Aron T: Well, gizmodo have their own source, so they can be sure of it's validity. Everyone else has to take it with a pinch of salt and call it a rumor, as we don't have direct access to the source.

Ed: How is that different than NYTimes saying a source confirms that a terrorist attack on the pentagon is going to occur on June 6?
The difference is that NYT is held to a higher standard whereas Gizmodo is clearly gaming for page views.
Do not misunderstand me, I love reading Giz', they have some great articles. But this just stinks of sensationalist journalism.

I thought the FCC or what-ever-the-gov-agency-is-named had to review it before release?

If the rumor is true, then they already have it for review. Companies can request that the results stay confidential until a certain date, which is probably what Apple did. They didn't do it last time around because they probably weren't ready in time, and the iPhone didn't cannibalize any existing products directly (it could have had an effect on iPod sales, but the features were so different and the price gap was huge so I'm guessing they didn't let that stop them).

What no one mentioned in their responses is the amazing fact that Steven has been married for 29 years ! That is by far, more worthy of adulation than a 3G iPhone. Industrial design a walk in the park compared to staying married that long congrats.

No duh, TUAW! All we can hope for now is an AT&T subsidy, that way I can pocket the extra cash from my recently sold iPhones. :)
