FlyTunes Brings Free Streaming Radio to iPhone & iPod Touch
One of the features of a lot of iPhone wannabes is a built-in FM radio so you can listen to your local stations. Why limit yourself to local stations? FlyTunes is a free streaming radio service that gives you access to over 375 channels of music, news, and sports on your iPhone or iPod Touch.Most of the channels are EDGE-friendly, so there is no need for a WiFi connection. To sign up for the service, all you need to do is point Safari on your iPhone or iPod Touch to flytunes.fm, and then follow the on-screen instructions to sign up.
How well does it work? Pretty darned good! It took me a minute to figure out that I needed to tap on the play button twice - once to bring up a small arrow and another tap to bring up the QuickTime player and start the stream. It only took about 5 seconds for the stream to queue up and start playing, and I didn't hear a hiccup once during about 5 minutes of listening over an EDGE connection.

I wish I could get this service on my car stereo. I'm stuck with either really weird college radio where the deejays play "experimental" John Cage-type stuff or mainstream radio and it's very limited playlists (can we say, Foreigner, anyone?).

I tried this during the private beta, and it wasn't as good as promised, nor as functional as advertised. I would queue up a station and it would play well for 10 minutes and crap out over EDGE. Often it wouldn't hop from wifi to EDGE, and stop loading (it only loads about 90m of music per session, and sometimes reloads the same 90m batch if you requeue it).
It should also be noted these streams aren't exactly "live" - they're prerecorded from radio stations and played in batches.
I hope it's better now, I'll give it a go to find out.

This service is great! It was a lot less robust and useful during the beta, however they have worked out several bugs and now there's a noticable difference. Couldn't ask for more on a free service.

I've been using this for probably 2 months. i use it to listen to some tunes (or loveline lol) whem i'm going to sleep...
I'm still waiting for a "real" streaming app...let's hope that Apple allows them on the app store!

......The ONLY reason I will ever use this is for The NY Sports Radio, better known as WFAN NY.
I never listen to music radio. For all my music pleasure, I have a 32GB iPod Touch.

Looks promising, but it's too bad they don't let you put in the station you want to listen to. You have to select from their (highly limited) selection. And since they don't have either of the two stations I listen to, I won't be using it.

I think it is great. I've found the experience at home, via wifi, to be excellent. RadioParadise on my iPod....how long have have I waited for that?

I just added streaming stations to ooTunes. Its not free, but you put whatever station you want in your iTunes library and it should work. It can even transcode on the fly so any station will work over edge. Check it out at ootunes.com

Just an update: FlyTunes submitted its native app to Apple on Monday & should be available in the app store on Friday! Many upgrades from the web app, but still FREE!!
