Ask TUAW: Mirrored RAID, sharing disks, iPhoto in Front Row, updating podcasts in iTunes and more
In this round of Ask TUAW we'll be looking at questions about setting up a software mirrored RAID with the Disk Utility, sharing volumes between Mac and Windows, forcing iTunes to update podcasts even if you haven't been listening, finding a missing iPhoto library in Front Row and much more.As always your suggestions are most welcome, and questions for next week should be left in the comments. When asking a question please include which machine you're running and which version of OS X, as certain answers will vary between different Macs and Tiger vs. Leopard, etc. (we'll assume you're running Leopard if you don't specify). And now, on to the questions!
ucflyboy asks
I am running Leopard with two 1 tb My Book Studios acting as a sort of RAID storing my music and movies. It's not a RAID since I thought I could not move the two drives to a mac mini I plan on buying as an HTPC. My question is, is there an Applescript or Automator command I can use to automatically copy items to drive 2 when I add the item to drive 1? Thanks, I'm new to Mac.
If I'm understanding you correctly you want the drives to mirror each other. This is easily done by setting up a software RAID with the Disk Utility (in /Applications/Utilities). Just go to the RAID tab, select the two volumes, and create a Mirrored RAID Set. You can check out the relevant Apple Support Document.

Is there a way to fake your operating system identifiers, information, etc. online? For example, Netflix's online viewing capabilities are only open to Windows users at the time, but could I make my computer pretend to be running Windows XP without actually running Windows XP? I don't even know if I would be able to play the videos once I get through, but it would be nice to have the ability to fake my OS for other things too.
Certain browsers, like Firefox, do allow to spoof the identifier. However, that won't fix your problem here. The Netflix streaming relies on Microsoft DRM. So even if you spoofed your OS identifier, it still would not be possible to play the streams on your Mac. If you have an Intel Mac your better bet is just to access Netflix in a virtual machine in Parallels or Fusion. On the bright side, Netflix streaming is coming to the Mac this year.

I have a few different iphoto libraries on my hard drive and on a firewire drive attached to my 12" powerbook g4 running 10.5.2. and i'd like to be able to access at least ONE or some of them through front row... Is there any way to do this using aliases or something? (it currently only show a "look for shared libraries" option when i get to photos in front row)
Front Row should automatically access your default iPhoto library. So make sure you have one of your libraries located at ~/Photos/iPhoto Library and it should be loaded automatically. If you already have your default library located there, there are a couple of other possible solutions outlined on this thread. It may be that some of your photos are blanks and the problem may be fixed by deleting them. The problem may also be with the AlbumData.xml file. Have a look at this Apple Support Doc and this website for some ideas.

My AppleTV has stopped appearing in iTunes and now I can no longer sync my music. It used to work fine and the AppleTV settings are properly set up in iTunes. How can I get it to show up?
Apple has a Support Document on this question with a variety of suggestions. It seems likely that this is a networking problem; are you sure you didn't change any of the network setup, either on the Apple TV, the Mac, or your router? I'd try going through Apple's suggestions one by one until your pinpoint the problem.

I subscribe to about a dozen or so podcasts and download them into iTunes. In most cases, I drag the podcast episode over to my iPod and listen to it from that. Periodically, iTunes will gray out the icon next to the podcast and tell me that it has stopped updating it because I haven't listened to it in a while and give me the option of clicking yes or no to update. Is there some way to turn that annoying "feature" off? I really don't care for iTunes to judge me unfairly as slacking off on my podcasts when I am simply not listening to them iTunes. Thanks.
I too find this particular "feature" of iTunes quite annoying. However, there is a shareware utility Cast Away ($7) which will allow you to work around this problem by automatically playing your podcasts (which is the only way to force iTunes to keep updating them).

I have a 500GB external G-Drive with both a USB and firewire connections. I would like to share the drive between my two computers. One is a MacBook Pro running OS 10.5.2, the other is a Dell Desktop running Windows XP. I partitioned the drive into Macintosh and DOS partitions (250GB respectively) and I'd like to keep the drive connected to both computers at the same time (MBP with Firewire and Windows with USB) and access the two partitions at the same time. Is there a way to do this, or do I have to unplug one computer and plug in the other to switch back and forth? Any ideas?
No this is not possible. Only one interface can be active at a time. There is, I think, a relatively easy solution. Just mount both volumes on one of the computers and then share one or both of the volumes to the other with SAMBA (though keep in mind that the Mac can read the FAT32 partition; the Windows machine cannot read the HFS+ partition without extra software). You'll need to turn on Personal File Sharing (with SMB sharing in the options) in the Sharing Preference Pane.

I'm looking into the possibility of going paperless, scanning important receipts and then archiving. While I've heard of a few mumblings of good software options, I'm having a devil of a time locating resources for OSX compatible scanners. (reviews) These days it seems like most scanners are actually multi-function printers, and I can live with that; I just don't want to end up buying a turkey. Are there any resources out there for mac scanners/multi-function printers, and figuring out which ones come well recommended?
I'll make it simple and just tell you that I think you want a Fujitsu ScanSnap for this purpose. Unfortunately, they're rather expensive but pretty much everyone who has one loves it. As we've previously noted, the much cheaper NEAT Receipts Scanner is supposed to get Mac support sometime this year, but there's no hard information yet on that.

I'm not sure how Netflix checks to see what operating system you are using, but it is most likely done through the user agent. You can change the user agent in Safari by enabling the debug menu ( defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu -bool YES ). Relaunch Safari, and go to Debug > User Agent and pick a windows one.

This is what I use to view some other supposedly "Windows only" video. I doubt it would work the same way with the DRM, though.
Peter Zich said 9:57AM on 3-14-2008
Oh, I didn't realize there was DRM or anything, I don't use Netflix.

The Fujitsu ScanSnap rocks.

I have a question about the Apple TV. I have the 40GB option and am currently streaming my content from my Macbook to the ATV. HOWEVER, it seems to me that it is sort of a waste of 40GB to leave it entirely unused. What I would like to do is this: sync all of my movies/tv shows/video media onto the Apple TV (thereby freeing that space up on my Macbook where I will never watch such media anyway) and stream my iTunes, and iPhoto (which is in total 60-70GB)
At the moment when I try to do this I can only do ONE or the OTHER i.e. 100% stream or 100% sync - it seems that this is built into the ATV. Has anyone found a work around for this? Thanks!

I failed to mention that I am running 10.5.2.

Well I officially have no idea how to actually ask TUAW since I don't see an email link here, so I'll post here:
160gb iPod classic. Just noticed this problem a couple weeks ago, I don't know if I just never noticed it before or if is recent. Bught in December so my warranty is up too btw. When playing back music, every so often, the music annoyingly stops for a hard drive read, and after a couple second delay resumes playback. I'm wondering if there is a solution to this problem? I noticed a couple of people posting identical problems on the Apple support forums, but I haven't seen any fixes, or even Apple's acknowledgement of the. I would say it happens roughly every 15 minutes. My music is in Apple lossless, but I've never had this problem with any of my other hard drive based iPods. Did they short change the cache in the 160gb version, software bug, hard drive about to die?

How can your warranty be up if you only bought it in December? They usually last a year.

I'm running a new 20" iMac, 2.4GHz and 10.5.2. I've ripped my personal DVD collection for iPod syncing and whatnot. The other night, my wife and I went looking for a DVD to watch, and realized we'd lent the disc to a friend. How can I get what's on my iMac to my TV. I think I just simply want to duplicate a DVD, but iDVD took 7 hours to write one. Looking for a solution other than AppleTV. Thanks!

Well, you can hook your iMac directly up to your TV. How you do this depends on your TV. So ... what kind of TV do you have? Is it analog only or does it have a digital port? Standard Def or High def?
climbingcolorado said 11:41AM on 3-14-2008
Great questions, Sabon. The TV is a 8yo Sony WEGA flat screen model. I'm guessing, due to its' age, is analog and standard def. I have component, RCA and S-video ins as options.
I know I can hook my 12" PBG4 up thru mini-DV to it's video RCA and stream across my network. This way I'm wireless, as opposed to running a cable across my living room to my TV. What about just duplicating a DVD, in general?
Thanks!!!
rp said 2:56PM on 3-14-2008
Not sure what the "duplicate" question is referring to. I burn my DVDs and everything else in Toast. You can copy the DVD using Mac The Ripper. You could compress that with a variety of programs. I use DVD2OneX. Not sure if that helps.

You can also use your iPod as a video player by getting the Apple composite AV cable and connecting the iPod to your TV:

I mostly listen to podcasts on my 8GB second generation iPod Nano. It's running vers 1.1.3, being synced to my black MacBook running Leopard 10.5.2.
The problem is after every sync, the iPod would freeze as it's about to play the podcast I choose. I have to hold down Menu and middle button to reset, and then it's fine after that.
Someone found a workaround: Play anything other than podcast first. That works most of the time, but hey, this is an Apple product. I expect better. Thanks TUAW.

Re: Netflix streaming for the mac - The articles says Netflix "hopes to support Web-based streaming for Mac owners in 2008." Hope is great - but it's very different from saying that streaming WILL come to the Mac this year. If you try to open streaming movies on a mac from Netflix, they explain that the reason they can't show them is that Apple won't license its DRM for their use. Given that Apple sells online movie rentals through the Apple store (competing with Netflix's free, though limited, offerings) it doesn't seem like there's much incentive for Apple to change their licensing position, so it seems unlikely that this will happen.

Re: the iPhoto and FrontRow woes -
I use a third party app called "iPhoto Library Manager." It makes it a snap to manage multiple libraries (I keep a local paired down library on my laptop, plus my full 75GB library on an external). One of the beautiful side affects of this software is that whatever you set as the "active" library in iPLM for iPhoto also becomes the "active" library for Front Row.
It's found here: http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/
There is a free version, but the full version is 20 bucks. I actually bought mine on MacZot or one of those other deals sites for about half-off, but would gladly pay full price now that I rely on it!

The support document that is referenced for the RAID mirroring specifically says that the drives must be IDE or SCSI. I have tried setting up mirroring on external drives and it didn't work. Is there something new in Leopard that allows it to work? Also, if I set it up, will it erase one of the disks?
FYI - I've got a similar setup and found that using SuperDuper! works great. I just schedule the backup to run every couple of days from one drive to another.
