Well, this was inevitable. When Steve Jobs dramatically presented the MacBook Air by removing it from a manila envelope, two enterprising artists saw an opportunity, and the result is AirMail. It's a vinyl laptop sleeve for the MacBook Air that looks just like -- you guessed it -- a standard issue manila envelope. They're lined with fleece and even feature a tie enclosure. Each hand made bag costs $29.95US, and they begin shipping two weeks from today.
It's not the most durable bag available, but among the most clever.

seems pretty uninspired...not clever at all...basically, opportunistic.

And a humbug to you, too, Bhavesh.
One could argue that it is impossible to be inspired w/o being clever. I think these guys are clearly inspired free spirits and are taking the road less traveled with their lives...good for them.
As for being opportunistic...when did that become a bad thing when applied to product development. It's not they are staked out at a disaster selling water for $100 a bottle.
peace!

well, i didn't say that opportunistic was bad, and i have nothing but admiration for how they live their lives (I read the ir About Us page), or the fact that they put out a product so fast. I just think the idea of pulling a laptop out of a manilla envelope on stage was actually the clever part, and copying the idea isn't really "clever".
it's still cool that they made it, but i would just bill it for what it is, the first peeps to make a manilla envelope case (which was inevitable), not as some original clever idea.

Is this any different than Tiger's and Panther's "Create Archive of ..." feature? Does the Tiger/Panther not compress?

Why not just get a mailer envelope with the bubbles inside of it? That way, if anyone looked at it, it would actually look like a real envelope. No one would ever know the Air was inside of it.

Well I suggested this yesterday on the "MacBook Air" post but I wasn't expecting something so fast!
I was thinking about having some screen print on the front maybe Cupertino address and a "Mail" icon for a stamp.
Don't think this will be the last one on the market.

I understand the stealth factor, but I'm not sure that I'd want a case that could be mistaken — even for a moment — for something as ephemeral as an envelope.

I'd like to see how TSA responds the first time someone goes through airport security with one of these. A full "electronic device" in an envelop will look suspicious.
(Or worse yet, what will happen when someone actually attempts to ship one)

This is really cool! I saw someone with a blue version of the beloved manilla folder today and was thinking about the MB Air. Wish they would make a blue one with stripes or the manilla one with stripes. That would be sweet!

Is it just me, or does anyone else find fleece to be extremely static-inducing?
