Oooh, the anticipation: New York's third Apple retail store now appears set to open on December 7, just in time for the shopping season (well, midway through Hannukah, but I forgive!). Backing up recent reports at ifoapplestore.com, reader David sent us a picture of the store construction wrap that leaves little doubt.
Will you be at the 14th Street store opening? We'll try to send our agents and snap some pictures.
Thanks David!

What? You don't like traveling across the bridge to icky Bellevue.
Heh I live on the EastSide, and avoid Bellevue like the plague. I've always gone to the mall in Lynnwood for the Apple Store, But I don't understand why they don't have one in Seattle.

well they do have on in u-village, which is where i normally go, but as part of my desire to get rid of my car all together in the city, it would be nice if they opened one downtown

You'd think they'd make the sign less confusing... the W and 4 trains don't go to West 14th. Sheesh.

Fair point -- they both go to Union Square, though, which is 1-2 blocks east of West 14th Street.
Using the subway numbers as typographic elements has a long history.

Not 1 to 2 blocks West of Union Square, but two full subway stops on the L train, which is more like 5 blocks. That's the lengthy crosstown blocks, so it's just shy of a mile from Union Square.

LauraM: Yes, the store is way, way west of Union Square -- however, West 14th St begins at 5th Avenue, which is a block west of the subway station. Didn't mean to cause more confusion!

Does the sign not make perfect sense in that it says "W" = West, "1" & "4" = 14th [Street] "Apple logo" = Apple [Store]?
Is this already understood, and I'm missing people's sarcasm or what?

@8: No, but you might be missing the fact that Apple is using actual subway line symbols to "spell" the location of the store.
Anyway, that neighborhood has sure morphed out of all recognition since the days when trannie hookers trawled the streets. It's more or less indistinguishable from Soho or Tribeca now.

If only they'd open one somewhere in Northwest Ohio.... say somewhere around Toledo? That way I don't have to go more than 70 miles away to get to a store.

they couldn't have done the sign any other way with the idea of subway symbols...
I mean the A E trains are very near... but how would you get the message across of the new W14th street store, with the letters "A" and "E" ?
oh... and the "L"
