First reports of iPhone VoIP application surface
It's not the first time we've heard the idea (SoonR Talk), but it does look like a true, calls-over-WiFi VoIP client for the iPhone could be just around the corner. Over at Blognation they've had a demo of one such solution from TruPhone. Whilst the application still requires heavy use of the Terminal (and is strictly alpha-quality), TruPhone is promising a release that "includes simplifying the activation and adding seamless switching back and forth between VoIP when open WiFi is available and the use of the SIM card when out of WiFi range. It is important to note that it is NOT NECESSARY to break the SIM lock to use TruPhone's iPhone VoIP application."
If you've always wanted to use a SIP-compatible VoIP solution on your iPhone, it appears your wish is about to be granted.

Personally I'd rather keep Blackjack than have Apple shut it all down over VoIP and SIM phreaking.

Last time i read ATT's terms and conditions.... VOIP is not a "Permitable use of service" or however they put it. Nor is using your iPhone as a web server or other such things.

specification: VOIP is not permisable on EDGE network. Wifi is candyland :)

@jrflesch - of course the beauty of using WiFi to route VoIP calls is that the traffic goes nowhere near AT&T EDGE - the user chooses which way to route traffic - not the network!
I am not sure whether the AT&T EDGE service is good enough for real time voice communications anyway.
Note - the current Truphone offering gives users free calls to PSTN in 40 countries and free inbound calls. Brilliant!

That's why I've penned this little letter to Steve.

Dear Mr Jobs,
I purchased an iPhone soon after it became available for $599.
As I live outside the US, and there is no AT&T in Lower Botswana [insert your country here], and you have no plans to sell it here for like, ever, I was forced to use a wonderful little utility to unlock it.
I'm sorry that I was a bit naughty to do this, but really, I had no choice. I'm sure you understand.
I really love the phone and think whoever started the project is a genius (it was you, wasn't it, Steve!).
I have also installed some wonderful apps on it, that were created by passionate developers, one of them an employee of Wil Shipley, the guy that's been supporting your projects ever since the NeXT days.
Remember those? Fun times, sticking it to the man. Not really making money because you didn't have many users, but hey.
Other developers claim much longer support, dating back to a device called a "Macintosh" and that they "bleed six colors" but I have no idea what that means. Maybe it's because they eat too much American junk food?
Anyway, these creative apps, particularly the SummerBoard and its wonderful themes, and another app that lets me record my voice, written by a programmer with a last name I can't pronounce ("sad-dune" or something), have so impressed my friends and relatives that some of them have also bought iPhones.
That's another six iPhones you've sold because of mine. And they are showing them to their friends and relatives. I understand there is a shampoo motif in there somewhere.
Maybe that's how you got to one million so quickly! Congratulations, by the way.
However, I am very concerned that you are now planning to:
(1) destroy my lovely iPhone if I attempt to update it through iTunes,
(2) prevent the creation of these innovative 3rd party apps,
(3) deny me the opportunity to have bugs fixed (it's a wonderful phone, but there's just this annoying little bug where Safari crashes when I listen to the iPod at the same time...)
Naturally, I am rather sad that you feel it necessary to do this. I really like my iPhone and would like to continue showing it to others on my frequent trips around the planet.
Going to be a little hard after you've destroyed it, but I guess I can show them how nice the chrome surround looks on the dead screen.

This is big news. I've been using Skype as my primary phone in my home office for about a year now and it would just make sense to use my iphone for everything.
I'm with T-Mobile, not AT&T, and I never agreed to be bound by them, so the terms I have an unlimited data plan with T-Mobile that I'm not sure I'll even use that much and like you said WIFI is fair game on any network.
If the carriers weren't being so precious with all this stuff in the first place, disabling functions, and trying to squeeze us for every last nickel and dime, I'll bet most of us wouldn't even be going to the trouble of unlocking.
Hopefully, this thing will work with both Skype out and my Skype in number. Otherwise, it loses a lot of it's practicality.

This will definitely NOT work with Skype. When will people learn that Skype is not SIP compatible and never will be... There might be some half-assed workaround, but it will never work as well as connecting directly through Skype.

What I personally would love to see, is Skype with a web-version for the iPhone. Just login at home through your WiFi connection, and talk for free and with a lot of fun with your iPhone. Technically it should be possible, although the webcam-function would obviously has to be left out :)
Skype + iPhone = ultimate VoiP fun ^^

I will not be surprise that sooner or later a VOIP solution from Apple will be coming... but honestly I don't think it will be on the iPhone but rather on the iPod touch. That way Apple will potentially have some leverage on any cell provider they are partnering with, so they can whenever they want add it to the iPhone if the telco are not working nicely with them. The iPod touch is not something that telco have any control on, and so it could be the pressure point to use.

#5 (Reg Muffit), Apple should not be forced to make sure their firmware updates work with the firmware hack you installed. You knew that you were taking a chance when you did that. You are lucky they warned you in the first place, any other company would have released the update, you would have installed it not knowing anything and then "Boom" you have a brick. The solution for you is simple, you took the responsibility to install the hack, now just take the responsiblity to not run the update until the hacking community comes out with a fix.
P.S. I am getting really sick of all this hubbub over the update "Possibly" breaking hacked iPhones. Can we please save getting bent out of shape until said update is released. For all we know apple is just covering their ass, nobody knows if the update will affect anything. So until then can we just shut up about it and enjoy our great new phones.

Well this is somewhat exciting, an app that might actually work as true VOIP.
I'm sick of all the hoopla over "VOIP on the iPhone" apps that turn out to be some lame web-based thing that calls you back on your cellular phone line. What makes that VOIP? It's only VOIP if it goes over WiFi or EDGE.
I agree with other comments that AT&T is likely going to be very adamant that Apple stop any VOIP. They want you using minutes, not free stuff, for phone calls.

This VoIP option looks like a great idea. This would combat against T-Mobile's VoIP that they have available at all of their hotspots. This way you would have more coverage and be able to have free calls whenever Wi-Fi is available. Thanks for the great post. This is exciting news.

Opinion noted, and I agree with you if that was the case.
However, all evidence points to Apple actively seeking to break the hacks - devoting time and resources to reverse 3rd party enhancements and build in more security to prevent future ones.
It looks very much as though they've made the choice to be hostile, not simply shrugging them off with a "hackers will be hackers" attitude.
But as you say, maybe it's paranoia on the part of the dev team. We'll know by the end of the week.

I want it. Even if VOIP dosent work via EDGE. I want to be able to use My office IP phone system(innovaphone IP305 this is SIP or H323) on the Iphone via wlan ruter. then I realy only need one phone. Any information for VOIP ont the IPhone wanted. woudnt it be great you come home or to the office the phone logs in to your on lan automatic and in to the LOCAL IP PHONE SYSTEM.
